“I believe that it’s not an accident that our hostages came home from Iran when President Reagan was president of the United States. He didn’t sit down in a negotiation with the religious extremists in Iran, he made it very clear that those hostages were coming home.'’
John McCain, completely in the grips of senile dementia
Reagan had nothing to do with any of it. The hostages were released because President Carter DID negotiate with Iran through Warren Christopher. It was called the “Algiers Accords” where Iran agreed to release the Hostages on January 19th, the day before Reagan was sworn in. They were then released as agreed the next day, about ten minutes
after Reagan was sworn in. Reagan had nothing to do with any of it.
So not only is McCain completely and totally wrong on every fact in that statement, even the point he was trying to make, “Negotiating with Iran would not have freed the hostages” was also just laughably wrong.
But not to worry, I'm sure the media will just say that the maverick was simply "misremembering" and they'll all go off to another great "press only" BBQ at his Arizona mansion while they all talk about how he’s such a “straight talker”.
